Sanskrit Dictionary
 
     This glossary contains close to 900 common Sanskrit words that a person practicing yoga would come across. We have used diacritical marks in as many words as possible, to help the reader pronounce each word correctly. Please refer to the pronunciation guide below. Rā ja - King

Rajas - The mutative principle, the second of the three guṇas. Dirt; dust.

Rā ja yoga - Achieving union with the paramā tma through meditation.

Rā mā yaṇa - One of India’s two great national epics telling the story of Rā ma

Rakta - One of the seven bodily constituents, mainly the red blood cells

Rasa - One of the seven bodily constituents, mainly the plasma (clear part of the blood)

Rasā yaṇa - Herbs, foods, or behaviors that support immunity, good health, and long life; that which causes ojas to be produced

Ratna - Jewel

Rechaka - Exhalation; emptying of the lungs

Retus - Semen

ṛg veda - Name of the first of the four Vedas

ṛṣi - Sage

ṛta - Unalloyed truth. Perceptual fact

ṛtambhara - Full of rta

Ru - The second syllable in the world ‘guru’, meaning light.

Rudra - Formidable, terrible. Also, the name of Ś iva.

Rūpa - Form; color. Light as one of the five bhūtas.
