Sanskrit Dictionary
 
     This glossary contains close to 900 common Sanskrit words that a person practicing yoga would come across. We have used diacritical marks in as many words as possible, to help the reader pronounce each word correctly. Please refer to the pronunciation guide below. Chaitanya - Absolute consciousness. The supreme spirit regarded as the essence of all living beings. PuruŚ a.

Chakra - Literally, a wheel or circle. Energy circles along the spinal column

Chak ṣu - The eye

Chā ndogyopaniṣad - One of the principal upaniṣads.

Chandra - The moon

Chandra bhedana - A type of prā ṇā yā ma in which the breadth is inhaled through the left nostril, and prā ṇa passes through the idā or chandra nā ḍḹ and is then exhaled through the right nostril, which is the path of the pingalā or sūryanā ḍḹ.

Chandra nadi - Another name for idā nā ḍḹ.

Charaka Samhitā - A classical text of ā yurveda, the Indian system of medicine.

Charitā rthatā - The state of having accomplished the end or desired object

Chaturaṅga - 4 limbs. Often used to refer to chaturaṅga dandā sana, the four limbed staff pose.

Chidā tmā - The thinking principle or faculty, pure intelligence, the supreme spirit

Chit - Pure conscious power; puruṣa.

Chiti-Ś akti - Supreme conscious power; puruṣa.

Chitta - The internal power which creates the sensations of cognition, conation and retention. It comprises the three instruments of reception, buddhi, ahaṁkā ra and manas.

Chitrā nā ḍḹ - One of the nā ḍḹs emanating from the heart, through which the creative energy of kundalinḹ passes to reach the sahā srara.
