Playing music in a yoga class

On a number of occasions, I found myself being distracted by the music played in yoga classes. I wonder why some yoga instructors do this. I realize that for some people whose minds are very distracted, music can help them focus. But for how long are they going to be distracted? What about the other people in the class who may not like music?

The whole point of doing the asanas is to be in the present and that can be possible only when we isolate ourselves from the 5 senses as much as possible. I agree it is a difficult thing to do in the beginning but it is perhaps better to take the harder approach than take the easy one and find ourselves in a 'comfortable' position from which it is difficult to progress further.

Re: Playing music in a yoga class

Music can be a very important part of a yoga experience. Researchers have found that music has the power to energize, soothe, change emotional outlook, boost immunity, reduce pain, speed recovery, lower blood pressure, improve focus and IQ, as well as aid weight loss.  Sound energy can drive changes in our minds and bodies as we listen to it.
